Hello Everyone! I hope you all had a safe, relaxing Memorial Day weekend and were able to participate in some of the traditional activities to honor our Veterans and Service Members.
This has been a busy year; I thank everyone who has joined us for our Business Resource Meetings and other activities. Our Program Committee came up with some fabulous programs and speakers this year. January featured Harold Williams, CPA who spoke on “Tax Planning for a Profitable Year,” In February, Derek Imes gave us tips on “Top Financial Mistakes to Avoid,” March brought us our “Annual Chili Cookoff.”
We received the discount coupon books in February to sell, making $6 profit for each one. Unlike last year’s books, these featured mostly Athens businesses, so it was easy to recoup this $12 coupon book cost by using only a couple of coupons. We made a nice profit.
Samantha Williams and Laura Leiden worked very hard in organizing the Cookoff and a “Silent Auction.” Our dear friends, Norm and Faye Grayson, offered the pavilion at their farm again this year. Did you know that Norm was the 1st male WCR member??? Thanks to the support we received from the vendors and members who contributed items for the auction, our Chili entrance contestants, Judges, and those who purchased tickets and came out to enjoy the delicious entries, we made a nice profit and were able to make a $1,000 contribution to the Athens Homeless Shelter. The check was presented at our April Business Resource Meeting.
Our April meeting brought a panel from UGA who brought literature and spoke to us about the UGA A.S.P.I.R.E.Clinic. Through this program, needy families are able to receive counseling on mental health, family issues, nutrition, financial issues, housing, and some (non-trial) legal issues. What a great service this is for the Athens Community!
At our May Business Resource meeting, we enjoyed a delightful lunch at Girasoles in Watkinsville and, as an added member benefit, Sarah Morang, Alec Hodson (Quarterman & Hodson Attorneys) and Mike Hubler, CPA gave a free 3-hour CE class on “Foreclosures, Shortsales, & Tax Implications.” The class brought out a good number of information items that were new to this type of class. Thanks Sarah, Alec, and Mike!
Our next event is our Membership Social that will be held June 23rd at George’s Low Country Grill on Milledge Ave, just before Loop 10. We hope to see you there! All NEW WCR members should attend and will be pinned during the Social.
